Affordable Housing
Lawrence Grayson’s Position on Affordable Housing in Ward 8
Housing is a Human Right – Fighting for Affordable, Safe, and Stable Homes
Ward 8 has long been the heart of D.C.’s working-class families, but rising rents, displacement, and neglected housing policies have left too many of our neighbors struggling. As your next Ward 8 Councilmember, I will fight for housing policies that put residents first, not developers—ensuring that every family has access to safe, affordable, and dignified housing.
My Affordable Housing Plan
✅ Protect Longtime Residents from Displacement
• Strengthen rent control protections and expand tenant rights programs.
• Ensure that new developments prioritize existing Ward 8 residents over outside investors.
• Push for a moratorium on predatory evictions and expand legal aid for renters.
✅ Increase Affordable Housing Options
• Require at least 50% of new housing developments in Ward 8 to be affordable for low- and moderate-income families.
• Support community land trusts to keep housing permanently affordable.
• Invest in public housing repairs and redevelopment without displacing current residents.
✅ Homeownership & Economic Empowerment
• Expand down payment assistance and homeownership programs for Ward 8 residents.
• Establish a first-time homebuyer initiative targeting working-class families.
• Crack down on predatory lending and gentrification-driven displacement.
✅ Support Returning Citizens & Vulnerable Populations
• Expand housing programs for returning citizens to prevent homelessness and re-entry challenges.
• Prioritize funding for seniors, disabled residents, and low-income families in housing initiatives.
Ward 8 deserves affordable, stable, and community-driven housing solutions—not displacement, broken promises, and rising costs. I will fight every day to ensure our community stays OURS while creating real pathways to homeownership and economic stability.
It’s time for a leader who understands the struggle and will fight for the people. Let’s build a Ward 8 where everyone has a place to call home.
